How to put a loyalty card in Apple Wallet

Three ways to get a stamp card onto your iPhone, and how to find it again at the till.

A stamp card you never have on you is a stamp card you never fill. Apple Wallet is the fix — the card lives on the iPhone, and it surfaces by itself when you are standing in the shop. It takes about two minutes to set up.

The quick way: scan the code

Open the Camera app and point it at the QR code on the card or poster.
Tap the notification that slides down to open the link in Safari.
Fill in your name and email — that is how the shop knows which card is yours.
Tap Add to Apple Wallet, then Add in the top right.

No scanning app needed. The Camera app has read QR codes on its own for years now.

If you were sent a link instead

Open it in Safari rather than Chrome or an in-app browser. Wallet passes are added through Safari, and the Add button either will not appear elsewhere or will not work. Then it is the same: details, Add to Apple Wallet, Add.

If you are at a computer

Open the card's page on your Mac or PC and fill in your details. You will get a QR code on screen. On the iPhone, open Wallet, tap the + in the top right, choose Scan Code, and point it at the screen.

On a Mac using Safari and signed into the same Apple Account, you can often just click Add to Apple Wallet and it arrives on the iPhone through iCloud.

Finding it again at the till

This is the part people miss, and it is the part that makes it worth doing.

Double-click the side button (or the Home button on older models) to open Wallet straight from the lock screen.
Open the pass, tap the … and turn on Automatic Selection so it comes up on its own when you are in the shop.
Leave Allow Notifications on if you want to be told when a stamp lands or an offer is about to run out.

When it will not add

Nothing happens on the Add button. You are not in Safari. Copy the link into Safari and try again.
The pass adds but looks empty. Give it a moment on Wi-Fi — passes update from the shop's server, not from the phone.
It vanished. Check Wallet's own settings for hidden or expired passes before assuming it has gone.

Apple Wallet holds boarding passes, event tickets, membership and travel cards the same way. If it has a barcode and an expiry, it probably belongs in there rather than in your pocket.
