Water damage is the most common way that the microphones in your OnePlus 5T can get damaged, whether it be from dropping your phone into water or steam getting into the microphone locations. They can also be damaged by general wear and tear or dust.
The OnePlus 5T actually has two microphones, one at the bottom and one at the top. If one of the microphones is damaged, it will likely be affecting your phone calls.
